It is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in the north west and home to a deer park, a Neo Classical Mansion, landscaped gardens, a working farm and 1,000 acres of stunning parkland. This blog started out as a record of the gardeners' year but now a number of people would like to contribute! We hope you enjoy reading about our day to day lives at Tatton.Tatton Parkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14151063966668278822noreply@blogger.comBlogger79125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4676708130979885189.post-36123860173789491672013-02-19T14:37:00.000+00:002013-02-19T14:37:25.309+00:00Scarecrows in the Sunshine!
There are some very
inventive people out there making these scarecrows...Janet Bradshaw, who is part of our Education team worked with the children at Longridge Community Centre to make some of our Scarecrows in the Kitchen Garden.

I love meeting people! Being an Event Co-ordinator at Tatton Park means
I get to meet lots of people from all walks of life. Everyone has a different reason
for coming to Tatton and a different story to tell. Whether it’s a couple who
have just got engaged, the little boy who is eagerly awaiting his Bar Mitzvah
or even the corporate manager who wants to host a show stopping conference for
prospective clients.

I also love diversity in life and always having something new and
exciting to take on. That comes in abundance here! I work with a very small,
close-knit team who deal with all aspects of event co-ordination, from taking
the initial enquiry to being their on the day. The same team conduct venue
viewings, liaise with clients, draw up contracts, raise invoices, set up for
the day itself and are there for the event to make sure everything runs
perfectly.

Being part of such a small team that takes on so many different roles
for an event really gives me the opportunity to get to know clients. The
rapport I build up with them means that I can really get an understanding of
what they want and I’m able to help them achieve the perfect day that they were
hoping for.

involves the rotation of three bays for planting, growing and maturing the

place; this is a fantastic time to observe the deer, it is a fascinating time
of year. The males that have spent lazy summer days together, growing antlers

other and separate.
Wallows are dug out in a wet area with thrashing antler and
pawing hoof, they are urinated in before wallowing begins to give the animal
not only a fearsome appearance but a pungent smell too! Antlers may be adorned
with grass for a similar reason. All this display, vocal and physical, is to intimidate
rivals and to attract females. Bucks will “parallel walk”, walking along side
each other over long distances, calling and sizing each other up. Fighting is a
last resort. Antlers clash, locked together in a pushing match to decipher the
strongest animal, this may go on for some time with two evenly matched
individuals. The weaker one will eventually back down and retreat, the victor
will often at this point, call at them in celebratory fashion. Injuries do
occur but are thankfully uncommon. During the rut the males cease feeding.

The differences between Red & Fallow Deer

The two species of deer here at Tatton employ two different
strategies to facilitate successful mating. Red Deer physically herd together a
group of females known as a harem and move around with them, defending them
against any interloper. Young males are often seen on the peripheries of the
group, opportunists waiting for the alpha male to be distracted!

Fallow Deer
have a totally different technique; they choose a territory, often in woodland
on raised ground. This is known as a “stand” where the Buck will call from to
attract does into his territory. Branches in the area will have scent on them,
smeared from a gland just below their eye; this is visible on the buck’s face.

The females only come season for a twenty four hour period
and only during this time will she stand for the male. If she is not covered
early in the rut, she will again come into season later, but this is not ideal
as it leads to late calves the following year.

The rut ends in November; then the males gorge themselves on
acorns desperate to replenish energy in time for the on set of winter.

only a month to go until the start of the Tatton 365 exhibition, I am in the
final stages of preparation. The selection process has been a bit of a mission
to say the least, and has so far taken the best part of two full days, just to
narrow down the final choices. The tricky part has been trying to represent
life over 12 months, as I have thousands of images to go through. However,
we're almost there now and it's time to get the images framed, prepare press
releases and all of the other aspects related to the exhibition.<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">
Life on the estate is currently at its busiest and I'm still popping in to
sneak the occasional opportunity where possible. It would have been interesting
to keep a record of the hours I've spent on the estate, but there have been plenty
of early mornings as well as the occasional very late night.<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">
The project has been a joy to work on. become a bit of a second home over the last year.<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">

A note from the Rangers

The Parkland deer are now “cleaning up” their antlers, which mean the velvet is coming off them. The antlers have been growing since spring; they have been soft to the touch and fed with minerals by blood vessels. When growing they were soft to the touch, now they are known to be in “hard horn”. The velvet is shed by scraping them against fallen branches or tree guards. The hard antler underneath is a sure sign autumn is just around the corner and the beginning of...........the Rut!
The RHS show was soon in full swing after a glorious spell
of sunny weather, and Tatton’s garden team were in high spirits having been
awarded a Silver Gilt for their entry ‘A flight of Fancy’.

Linking in with the Tatton Park Arts Biennial 2012,
the imaginative concept behind the garden design is that the last Baron
Egerton, who collected plants and garden styles from many continents, including
the famous Japanese Garden, sent plant material to other countries, including pea
and bean cultivators to his estate in Kenya. Combining his
passion for plants with his interests in exploration, early radio cars, and was
a pioneer aviator it helped launch our concept for the 1930’s style rocket, landing on a desolate planet where 1000’s
of seeds spill out onto the baron land and flourished into a mass of colour.

The build took 2 weeks from start to finish, and much of the

tonnes of the rocks and boulders that make up the Moongate!

Hey there!

I'm Kat Robbins and I'm doing work experience here at Tatton Park in the Marketing Department. I'm currently at Nottingham Trent University studying Broadcast Journalism and in October I will be going into my third and final year. I have been at Tatton for just under a month and am thoroughly enjoying it! I have been editing the Tatton Times that is the three monthly staff magazine as well as writing press releases and designing the Christmas Leaflets and flyers. I am enjoying the marketing and PR side of Tatton and feel it will really boost my portfolio and give me a really valuable experience.

And... this is me.

(completely coincidental that I have Tatton Park behind me, Honest. Good to know it's being promoted in Alderley Edge too though eh?)

My favourite part of Tatton are the gardens and the Parklands, the Japanese Garden is my particular favourite part out of the gardens. I love the Japanese and oriental culture and I find the gardens very close to a real Japanese garden. I was very impressed with the knowledge the tour guides have when I went on the tour about a week ago, she was particularly thorough with cultural information.

I would love to travel around the world and aim to go the year after next, after I have completed University. South East Asia will be my first point of call.

I can't quite get my head around the fact that a 'normal-ish' (apart from being completely wealthy) lived in this Mansion, I can't imagine walking around the rooms, shouting 'When's tea?' or calling to the dogs or cats outside in the gardens!

I took some photos when I went down to the farm last week, these are them! I'm rather partial to photography and love to take photos wherever I am of my favourite bits - of life - I guess!

For
the Mansion Team the end of May brought with it the delivery of a very large
packing case and a stressful but gratifying job! As you can imagine it isn’t
every day that you move a great painting by the artist Van Dyck, but when the

ready. As you can imagine it isn’t every day that you move a great painting by
the artist Van Dyck, but when the Mansion team welcomed his painting of The
Martyrdom of St Stephen back to Tatton it was everyone to the
ready. This internationally-important painting from the Tatton collection was
being returned from a prestigious exhibition held at Dulwich Picture Gallery in
London which ended on May 27.Iconic 17th
century painter Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599 – 1641) left his native Antwerp in
1621 for Italy to study the work of earlier Italian painters Titian, Veronese
and others.

During his travels he painted the
portraits of the wealthy and powerful, becoming something of a celebrity as an
artist. In spring 1624 he reached Palermo in Sicily. Not long after his arrival
Sicily was struck by a violent outbreak of plague, and until recently it was
believed that he left for safety. The exhibition, ‘Van
Dyck in Sicily: Painting and the Plague 1624-1625’ explored newly-found evidence that he in fact
remained on the plague-stricken island, and during his time there produced
major paintings along religious themes, such as his St
Rosalia in Glory and the Tatton St
Stephen.
Van Dyck biographer Robin Blake
said ‘Whether created in the heat of the epidemic, or as ex voto offerings
after it was over, the paintings played a major role in the imagined drama of
their city’s deliverance’.

Strange to think
then that a painting produced on a Mediterranean island by the great master of
17th century art
should be wending its way home to a 19th century English
country house. According to records, in 1793 its interesting journey had taken
it to the Church of San Pascual Bailon in Madrid, after which it was sold and
imported into England by the dealer William Buchanan.

In 1814, when he was busy furnishing his
fine new mansion at Tatton, Wilbraham Egerton acquired it for his collection
from the Delahante sale at Phillips Auction house on 3rd June, at a cost
of 700 guineas. Since that time it has graced the drawing room at Tatton with
its sombre beauty. Safely back in position the painting, measuring six feet by
five feet, took the strength of seven people to lift back into place on the
silk lined walls. As you can imagine lifting something extremely heavy, fragile
and important to hang against delicate silk, battened to the walls some 100
years ago is a ‘bottle tester’, but with the aid of art handlers and the team
everything went without a hitch.

It is always a
great honour for Tatton to be asked to contribute to major exhibitions, not
only does it allow us to share access to our collection, but it also highlights
the quality of the objects in our care and gives Cheshire a plug. Bringing
together Van Dyck’s Sicilian works was a fantastic achievement by curator
Xavier Salomon at Dulwich, but we are very glad to have St Stephen back. If you
want to come and see the painting please do. Our team will be happy to show it
to you.

Hall comes to life with the sights and sounds of the 15th century....

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">It’s that
time of year again when the Old Hall at Tatton turns into a Medieval Fayre,
Encampment and Battleground...unfortunately a very muddy one particularly on
saturday, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of anyone. Luckily most tents went
up on friday before the torrential rain came and the grounds of the Old Hall
were transformed into a riot of colour, flags and re-enactors.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">It was
surprisingly busy on saturday and just when the muster for the battle started
the heavens opened but all the soldiers, knights and archers stood their ground
and went out to the battlefield...and came back!

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Sunday
started with much better weather and the sun made everyone feel brighter
too...A lot more visitors arrived and soon the grounds were packed with people
wanting to see the tournament, falconry, demonstrations of guns, and the final
battle outside on the flat ground. As always there was plenty to buy and have a
go at, children’s activities in our Education tent, and tasty thing to eat and
drink. The Old Hall itself was open and with guides to tell you all about its
history and give you a feel of what it was like long ago.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Then came
the muster for the battle again, it looked a bit threatening with some black
clouds in the distance and as the intrepid archers went out into the field,
including the elite few of the Tatton Archers, the weather seemed to clear. An
exciting battle started, arrows flew over from both sides, the guns fired and
smoke billowed across the field, a few injuries tended by the Red Cross (not so
lucky in the original battles). There were lots of shouts and cheers of
encouragement from the crowd and then it was all over and the victorious
winners marched back to camp.

Things are moving fast with Tatton 365. Spring has passed and Summer is now
here, albeit not very convincingly. Life at Tatton is getting busier, with the
events calendar in full flow now. All the behind the scenes work over the
winter is paying off and the army of staff and volunteers have got the estate
up to scratch.

Visually, everything is changing so quickly. The colours and tones are changing
weekly as Spring turns to Summer and there have been new arrivals on a daily
basis on both farm and estate.

I have the constant frustration of not being able to spend as much time as I
would like shooting the project, but that was always going to be the case. My
visits are always extended by an hour or two. I think it's swiftly becoming an
obsession. However, a healthy obsession and my back up hard drives are quickly
filling up.

The aim of the project is to document all aspects of life at Tatton Park. My background is in advertising photography, so this project is a little bit of a departure for me, in the sense that most of my work is constructed photography, normally working to a very detailed brief. The only brief for the Tatton 365 project is self appointed, and is to present a detailed and personal insight into life at Tatton. I started shooting in the summer of 2011 and will finish around October of 2012, with some of the work going on display in the mansion from 6th October. Details are on the Tatton Park events listing webpage

I shall try to post monthly on the build up to the exhibition, with a few images thrown in to give a taste of some of the work.

The gardens are starting to come to life, with the trees and shrubs packed with buds biding their time before they burst open. The farm is gradually welcoming new arrivals and lambing week is just around the corner. It's always hard driving through the estate at dawn, with the silhouettes of deer herds slowly emerging from the morning mist.
‘Among Pioneers: Maurice Egerton and Early Flight’, opened on Saturday and explores the fascinating story of the development of aeroplane flight during the early 20th century.

Central to the story the exhibition uncovers is the passionate involvement of Maurice Egerton during this intense period of exploration into early flight. Maurice, 4th and last Baron Egerton of Tatton (1874-1958) was a pioneer aviator, photographer, filmmaker, traveller and motorist.

In 1903 the American Wright brothers made the first controlled, powered and sustained, heavier-than-air, human flight in an aeroplane. Inspired by this great event Maurice devoted a decade of his life to pioneering aviation work, at first developing his own aircraft, then testing and flying planes, eventually for the Royal Navy.

The exhibition explores Maurice’s friendships with some of these early aviators and his personal journey to make his own ambitions to quite literally, take flight.

Original material from Maurice’s archive and photographic collection is also be on display.

The exhibition is a collaboration between Tatton Park and Jim Rait, an aero-engine designer and expert in aviation history. The exhibition will be supplemented by a special talk by Jim on Wednesday, September 20, ‘Invention and adventure – early flight and technology’. Further details can be found below and on the Tatton Park website.

Mansion and collections manager Caroline Schofield said: “Maurice Egerton is something of an enigma. This quiet, unassuming and shy man is found among the ranks of the pioneers in the development of early aeroplanes in Britain. Though a terrible flying accident curtailed feats of daring, he continued to test and fly aeroplanes during the First World War, employing his meticulous eye for detail in support of the war effort. ”

‘Among Pioneers: Maurice Egerton and Early Flight’ exhibition
Saturday, March 24 to Sunday, May 6 2012 (closed Mondays). The Mansion is open from 1pm-5pm (last entry 4pm).

Penelope Cave, prizewinning pianist and harpsichordist, will be giving a special performance of music played and loved by Elizabeth Egerton, the ‘lady of the house’ during the early 19th century and a contemporary of Jane Austen.
Elizabeth Egerton (1777-1853) was a keen musician, with a serious and lasting interest in music. Her scores are held in Tatton Park’s collection and, with performances of pieces from these volumes, Penelope will trace her progress from a wealthy Yorkshire childhood, via a boarding school for young ladies, to becoming the wife of her cousin, Wilbraham and mistress of Tatton Park.

Penelope’s talk will highlight some of the findings of her research into the Tatton Park music collection, towards a PhD at the University of Southampton (funded by the National Trust and the Arts and Humanities Research Council).

This is a rare opportunity to hear some newly discovered material about a previous owner of the house and to hear the very music that Elizabeth loved and played in this stunning setting. Prepare to be transported!

The Musical melodies performance and talk is one of three lectures taking place in the mansion this year. The lectures form part of the extensive adult and family-learning programme with nearly 60 activities and participatory events taking place this year.
If you're familiar with the Biennial or it's starting to ring bells, you might remember the art installation in 2010 called Evacuate created by artist Kate MccGwire, where thousands of locally sourced bird feathers weaved through and consumed the kitchen. It was a piece, even my mother-in-law remembers and talks about today, because she found it both haunting and beautiful.

Anyhow, you will be pleased to hear that the Biennial is returning to your park, opening to the public on Saturday 12th May. The theme is Flights of Fancy, where artworks will refer to Tatton Park's aeronautical legacy, as well as the human urge to fly. Did you know that during the Second World War, Tatton's parkland played a major role in the training of RAF paratroopers and the grounds were used for test parachute jumps? Lord Maurice Egerton of Tatton was even described to have been "an innovator, a man of great inventive and technical skill, a pioneer aviator, photographer and filmmaker", so it makes sense for this year's Biennial to explore these themes.

A walk in the gardens on Sunday 12th Feb was a big surprise as to how many families had ventured out on such a chilly day...it all looked very pretty but as the mist came down and the landscape vanished we wondered if the scarecrows came to life when everyone had gone home. Some of them did look a bit worse for wear slumped against trees as though they’d had a good time the night before! Very inventive, particularly Darth Vader but I did like the Pirate, he seemed to be ready to dash off somewhere...

This bird is rare in Cheshire and Tatton is one of (if not the!) best place to see them in the county as we have one here most winters.

The majority of smews in Britain are females, they are known as "redheads"....because they have a red head.

Melchett Mere in the summer

The weather was stunning, a beautiful winter's day with bright sunshine over the mere illuminating various species of Wildfowl. Their stunning plumage was viewed with the aid of telescopes set up in the Allen Hide.

Members of the Knutsford Ornithological Society and myself helped members of the public to use them and help identify the birds. Goldeneye, Teal, Wigeon Mallard and Pochard were seen along with Great Crested Grebe and Little Grebe. Woodland species could be seen on the bird feeding station including Coal Tit, Nuthatch and a pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers.

Between 30-40 visitors called into the hide during the session and were very well received. The visitors also included many children which was especially pleasing as their reaction to seeing new birds through a telescope in such bright conditions was great. A Buzzard perched in a tree was the children’s favourite!
